A few days back it came out that Katrina Kaif wrote on Twitter that Salman is quite lazy. Now, it has been revealed that it is not Kaif in real but someone else who has been impersonating her.

Katrina Kaif, who is shooting in Bhopal at present, expresses her annoyance saying, “Something has to be done to stop this sort of vandalism. I am not on Twitter or any other social networking website. I plan to start my own website by the end of the year.”

“I don’t think it’s cool to let people know where I am, or what I’m doing throughout the day. I’m not on any of the social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. I guess my life is not an open Facebook,” she adds with disgust.

Katrina plans to start her website called ‘katrinakaifofficial.com’ to keep in touch with her fans and intends that other websites using her pictures and quotes without proper consent would have to face legal consequences.

About her website, she says, “I don’t want this to be something I start and then leave to others to take care of. Of course, there will be professional employed to oversee my website. But I’ll picking and choosing all the material and pictures that go into it.”

“My website will be comprehensive. It will have my exclusive pictures. In fact I’ll be doing photo sessions done specially by me. It will also have pictures taken by me on my sets and on location. My website will be fun, feisty, bubbly and colorful, to go with my image,” she adds.

Elaborating on his birthday plans, Ranbir said, “I will be having a quiet dinner with my parents. My sister Riddhima and my brother-in-law Bharat are traveling this year. I’m a shy guy and I normally like having an intimate celebration rather than something ostentatious.”

He adds, “I’m not one of those guys for surprise parties. I feel awkward. I have no idea what Deepika has planned for me. I haven’t seen her for a few days because I have been in Bhopal and she was in Mumbai. However, I hope it isn’t too big a surprise because even she knows how reserved I am.”

Of course, he does not forget to mention his forthcoming release and says, “The best gift I can ask for this year is that everyone goes to see my film. I don’t know how to hardsell myself or my film but I can surely request people to see it.”

This hidden side of Katrina was revealed on the sets of Rajkumar Santoshi’s ‘Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani’ where during a shoot in Goa, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif had to get off from a jet ski onto a ladder hanging from a 200 ft overhead bridge. Where this Barbie Doll of tinsel town completed her stunt at an amazing speed, Ranbir was struggling with the same. In fact, Ranbir was so amazed and surprised by Katrina’s ability to do the stunt that he nicknamed her as ‘Rambo ki sister Sambo’.

“Katrina was so good in the action scenes that I actually named her ‘Rambo ki sister Sambo,” said Ranbir.

‘Kanjeevaram’, under the direction of Priyadarshan, won the award for the best film and also the best actor for Prakash Jha at the 55th National Film Awards. The unit threw a celebration party on Tuesday evening and a host of celebrities joined in the success bash despite the sudden heavy downpour. Bollywood stars have always been known for their association with social cause. Now, Priyanka Chopra does her bit by supporting the ”Save the Children” campaign which aims to provide quality education to eight million children living in conflict-affected areas. The campaign will also work in the area of providing, securing and protecting children’s rights to food, shelter, health care, freedom from violence, abuse and exploitation.

Priyanka has many other associations with social causes and she expressed her hope that the campaign would be able to spread awareness on how education can change the future of young children.

“Save the Children is associated with about 11 states in India. I hope at some point of time to be able to visit at all places where Save the Children works and see for myself how much help I can be of and also in every possible way create awareness about how important education is in our country,” said Priyanka Chopra to the reporters at a press conference to announce her association with Bvlgari Save the Children campaign in Mumbai.

Lately, she also refused to turn up for the Indian Independence day carnival this year in Chicago when she did not get her remuneration in time. Inspired and all geared up by this, the channel is coming up with yet another show, ‘Pati, Patni Aur Woh’, with five real life television star couples who would be taking up the parenting challenge. The five couples are Rakhi Sawant and her ‘official husband’ Elesh Parujanwala along with four other celebrity couples – Shilpa Saklani and Apurva Agnihotri; Juhi Parmar and Sachin Shroff; Mouni Roy and Gaurav Chopra; and Debina Bonnerjee and Gurmeet Chaudhary.

Nikhil Madhok, vice-president, marketing, NDTV Imagine, explains, “Some time back, there were two-three shows being launched annually and these shows were being replaced after a long period. Now every other month, there is a new launch as channels have at least six-seven new shows lined up for a year.”

The show which is based on ‘The Baby Borrowers (BBC Worldwide Productions)’, will have the contestant couples deal with five stages of parenthood – Dummy pregnancy, handling infants, handling toddles,handling rebellious teenagers and then grown up kids.

Meanwhile, Rakhi has even decided on a name for her child. “I will call her Khushi,” she says. Talking about the concept of the show, she says, “I don’t know. All I know is that I am going in a house just to have a picnic for one month.”

However, Prachi laughs this off claiming it to be rumour and says, ”I was really shocked and surprised when I heard about this! I laughed at this weird piece of news! Having said this, I am absolutely aware that such things can be blown out of proportion, and could be a publicity stunt. The song ”Teri Meri Yeh Zindagi” showcases how post marriage, the relationship between each of the two couples flow, one who have had an arrange marriage and one who have had a love marriage.”

Describing the scene, Prachi said, ”If you see the song, you will notice that the bath tub is in a valley below a tree in the evening and does not have any water! It was meant to be a cute piece where the couple is enjoying the company of each other, rather than being a bath sequence!”

‘Life Partner’ releasing today has Tusshar as Prachi’s husband and also stars Govinda, Fardeen Khan and Genelia D’Souza.

The film has been made with a budget of 55 Crore and has SRK and Kajol in the main lead. SRK here plays the role of a Muslim who suffers from the Asperger syndrome, a form of autism that impacts social interaction abilities. Things show the plight of the character when he is arrested as a suspected terrorist in post 9/11 Los Angeles after the authorities mistake his disability as suspicious behaviour.

“It was after much deliberation that Kangana was finalised for the role. The character that Kangana would be playing in ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ is such that it is of paramount importance to get the casting right,” Rai told IANS.

Rai has no qualms about choosing Kangana for a comic role. He says, “Yes, I have studied her filmography quite closely and I know for sure that ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ would finally showcase Kangana in a different light. There is a definite humor to the film which thankfully is poles apart from life vs death roles that Kangana has played in the past.”

He added, “When I was narrating the film to her, she came across as someone who was very passionate and energetic when it came to films. Moreover, what worked for me was the fact that she was taking a personal view on the subject. Now that’s the kind of girl I wanted for the film since I wanted her to add something of her own to the character as well.”

On Monday Australia collapsed to their seventh defeat in nine matches against top-ranked South Africa this year and now lie third in the rankings behind India.

However, Australia will climb back to second if they win the last match in Johannesburg on Friday.

South Africa won Monday’s fourth game by 61 runs to clinch the five-match series 3-1 with a match to spare.

Australia held the top spot for all but 10 months of the duration, including 52 straight months from October 2002 to January 2007, ICC said in a statement.

After Rahul Dravid decided to step down from the captain’s job soon after India’s England tour last year, Tendulkar suggested Dhoni’s name to the then BCCI president Sharad Pawar.

Under Dhoni, India won, among others, Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa, tri-series in Australia, Test series against Australia at home before recording their first ODI series win in New Zealand and first Test series there in 41 years.

Refusing to disclose much about his suggestion to Pawar to appoint Dhoni the captain, Tendulkar said, “I spoke to the BCCI president but I would not want to discuss everything publicly. As I said earlier, it’s my principle that whatever happens inside dressing room should stay there.”

Tendulkar, however, did not hide his satisfaction after Dhoni lived upto his expectation.

“Talking about his captaincy, I’m extremely happy and delighted the way he has conducted himself,” Tendulkar said.

“He is a balanced guy, is always on his toes all the time. Before he was made the captain, standing in the slips I interacted with him and picked lot of things which clearly indicated that he has a sharp brain, his approach was pretty clear and not complicated”, Tendulkar said.

“I think he is doing a fantastic job,” he said.

Incidentally, Tendulkar himself struggled whenever he was saddled with captaincy.

Asked if he would love to have another go at it, the Mumbai run-machine was almost indignant.

“Now what kind of question it is?” he asked.

“The team is doing so well (under Dhoni) and you should be proud of it,” he admonished the person posing the query.

Tendulkar said he was rather happy playing mentor’s role to younger players.

“To players like Harbhajan Singh or Yuvraj Singh, I’m like their elder brother. I share information not just with them but also with other members of the side. It’s a terrific atmosphere in the dressing room and it’s not just a one-way traffic,” he said.

“We learn from each other and if someone has some issues, there is the coach. Generally it’s a great atmosphere and I enjoy being part of this side,” he added.

Both Dhoni and Harbhajan, who were to receive the Padma Shri awards by President Pratibha Patil at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Tuesday, skipped the ceremony.

Coming out of an intense two weeks focused on international affairs, including a hostage drama after Somali pirates briefly hijacked an American ship, the White House is shifting American and global attention back to the financial storm that has ravaged the world.

The president’s message was reinforced by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who said on Tuesday there were “tentative signs” that the recession may be easing. But he also warned that any hope for a lasting recovery hinges on the government’s success in stabilizing shaky financial markets and getting credit to flow more freely again.

Obama’s speech was a thorough and lengthy summing up of how the recession began and what his administration has done to counter the downturn and prevent it turning to catastrophe as the American and global financial system came perilously close to collapse in the last months of 2008. He declared that he was seeking a middle course, realizing that he faced criticism from those who said he was doing too much as well as those who believed he had done too little.

“There is no doubt that times are still tough. By no means are we out of the woods just yet. But from where we stand, for the very first time, we are beginning to see glimmers of hope,” the president said in speech at Georgetown University.
Reaching into the Bible for his material, Obama cited Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, to compare the American economic system he inherited to the man who build his house on a pile of sand. The new economy that Obama said will emerge from America’s worst economic tailspin in seven decades must be like the strong house built by the man who used a foundation of stone.

“It is that house upon the rock. Proud, sturdy, and unwavering in the face of the greatest storm,” Obama said.

Economists are divided on whether the recession is beginning to blow itself out or just in the midst of a lull, before striking hard again. But with some good news trickling out of various sectors in the US economy and his administration nearing the symbolic 100-day mark, Obama felt the need to sum up what his administration has done so far and draw a map of where it wants to take the economic system.

The speech did not outline any new programs or initiatives.

Hours before the speech, a cold dose of reality came in the form of a report saying retail sales fell unexpectedly in March, decreasing by 1.1 percent. That was the biggest decline in three months and a much weaker showing than the 0.3 percent increase that analysts expected. At the same time, wholesale prices dropped sharply last month as the cost of gasoline and other energy plummeted, fresh evidence that inflation appears to pose little threat to the economy.

Tuesday’s indicators epitomized a continuing problem for government policymakers and ordinary people alike: How to figure out where the economy is headed amid such often contradictory business signals.

To revive it, the Fed has cut a key bank lending rate to a record low of near zero and has rolled out a number of radical programs to spur lending to Americans, a key ingredient to turning around the economy.

On that front, the Fed recently plowed $1.2 trillion into the economy in an attempt to reduce interest rates for mortgages and other loans. The Fed, meanwhile, also is considering expanding a program to jump-start consumer lending, Bernanke said.

Many analysts believe the economy will continue to shrink in the April-June quarter but not nearly as much as it had been %u2014 perhaps at a rate of 2 to 2.5 percent.

The economy shrank at a 6.3 percent rate in the final three months of 2008, the worst showing in a quarter-century. Some economists say it fared about as poorly in the first three months of this year, while others expect a 4 to 5 percent rate of decline. The government releases its initial estimate for first-quarter economic activity at the end of April.

The government is battling a three-headed monster: housing, credit and financial crises, which are the worst since the 1930s.

“The current crisis has been one of the most difficult financial and economic episodes in modern history,” Bernanke said.
Unemployment hit a 25-year high of 8.5 percent in March, and many people still are losing their homes or jobs, or fear they will lose them. Still, there has been a drop in unemployment benefit filings, and several retailers have predicted solid April sales. Stock investors, shoppers and home buyers also seem less jittery, while once-frozen credit markets are thawing slowly, and deeply worrisome economic indicators appear to be stabilizing.

North West Frontier Province Governor Awais Ahmad Ghani and Chief Minister Haider Hoti Wednesday signed the Nizam-e-Adl Regulation that the National Assembly, the lower house of Pakistan’s parliament had approved Monday and which President Asif Ali Zardari had ratified the same night.

Sharia laws may have been imposed but the Taliban have already served notice that they would not play ball.

“My brothers, we have only conventional weapons – and Islamic sharia gives people the right to keep them. Islamic jihad will continue until Judgement Day,” Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan Tuesday told Geo TV’s Capital Talk show.

Hitherto, it had been thought that the Sharia laws were only being imposed in the Malakand division. That they will also be enforced in the Kohistan district, which is not part of Malakand, has led to speculation that there there could be more to the Nizam-e-Adl Regulation than meets the eye.

The full details of the Nizam-e-Adl Regulation have not been made public.

Speaking to reporters after the signing ceremony, the Chief Minister said the government had fulfilled what the people of the area wanted and it is now up to them to take their cases to Qazi courts.

At the same time, he admitted it would take time to establish Qazi courts across the division.

He also clarified that the Sharia laws were not meant to serve as a parallel judicial system but were aimed at providing quick justice within the parameters of Islamic laws.

“Our priority is ensuring peace in our area and security of the people,” the Chief Minister maintained.

The carrier rocket, Long March 3C, blasted off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

An official with the National Engineering Center of Satellite Navigation said the successful launch of the geostationary satellite was of great importance as it was the second satellite navigation system independent from foreign technology.

The system, code named ‘COMPASS’, is a crucial part of the country’s space infrastructure for providing navigation and positioning services in transportation, forest fire monitoring, disaster forecast, telecommunications and public security, the official said.

* The yen and the dollar inched up on Wednesday as optimism about a global economic recovery ebbed after weaker-than-expected U.S. economic data, stemming demand for other currencies.

Asian units were also higher versus the greenback.

* Most Asian stock markets were in the red. At 0340 GMT, the Hang Seng was 1.9 percent down, the Nikkei had shed 1.4 percent, the Kospi had lost 1.6 percent, while the Shanghai Composite index was 0.5 percent lower.

* Indian shares are expected to take their cues from the earnings and outlook of IT-services bellwether Infosys Technologies (INFOSYS.BO : 1370.8 0).

Following the announcement of the company’s results for fiscal 2008-09, company officials said that consolidated revenues for the new fiscal in dollar terms would be in the range of $4.35 billion and $4.52 billion, a 6.7 per cent to 3.1 per cent decline on the revenue of $4.66 billion recorded in the just concluded fiscal.

“This is for the first time we have given a guidance for the full year for de-growth on a year-on-year basis. If there is change, we will have to come back and revise it upwards. The amount of uncertainty today is unprecedented. This is one of the worst economic environments seen in our lifetime,” Infosys chief executive officer and managing director Kris Gopalakrishnan said. The Infosys CEO however added that the company remains financially strong “with more positives and few negatives”.

In rupee terms the company has projected year-on-year growth of 1.7 per cent to 5.7 per cent with revenues in the range of Rs 22,066 crore and Rs 22,928 crore. The earnings per share are however projected to decline in rupee terms as well by 7.6 per cent to 3.3 per cent.

For the fiscal year that ended in March the company reported a 30 per cent growth in revenues at an income of Rs 21,693 crore. The net profit after tax for the concluded fiscal was recorded at Rs 5,988 crore, a year-on-year growth of 28.5 per cent, which beat projections made at the end of December 2008.

“Many of our clients are impacted by the financial crisis and are looking to us to help them reduce their expenses and optimise their businesses. Our services, solutions and business model are well suited to help them in this environment. We are focusing on enhancing our business and investing smartly in the future,” Gopalakrishnan said.

Infosys said there had been pressure over the fourth quarter of the 2008-09 fiscal on the pricing of the company’s services, pushing it down by 3 per cent. “Though the pricing model remains challenging, we believe that our global delivery model adds value to customers as they focus on efficiencies in cost structures,” chief operating officer S D Shibulal said.

Member of the Infosys board and head of human resource development, education and research, T V Mohandas Pai said “The year ahead would be challenging on the people front.” He said the company had classified 2,100 employees in a low-performance category on the basis of a ‘no tolerance policy’ to non-performance. Out of this, 800 people had left the company, 600 are in a performance improvement plan and another 600 were out-placed, Pai said while claiming nobody had been retrenched.

The ‘no tolerance policy’ had seen 2 per cent of people leave the company last year and this year the number amounted to 3.5 per cent, Pai said. “Globally there are very few jobs and flexibility on the people front is less and tolerance for poor performance is zero,” he said.

Pai said there would only be around 1,00,000 IT jobs available over the next year across the industry compared to 3,00,000 to 3,50,000 jobs over the last year. According to Pai, the company will honor all 20,000 campus offers made around the country that is passing out in 2009.

‘My intention was not to portray sexiness or how much can one bare. My intention was to portray the beauty of the ever-changing Indian woman, someone who is beautiful, more modern as well as more comfortable with her sexuality,’ she said.

Asked if she had got the desired impact, Celina said: ‘Well, the way response has been so far, I guess I have. My intention was to arouse the sensuousness with beauty and dignity and not vulgarity and I have pretty much managed to achieve that.’

Costing just 100,000 rupees ($1,979; £1,366), the Nano will now go on sale across India next month, with deliveries starting in July.

Tata hopes the 10-foot (3-metre) long, five-seater car will be cheap enough to encourage millions of Indians to trade up from their motorcycles.

Tata owner Ratan Tata has described the Nano as a “milestone”. Analysts say it will not make a profit for six years.

Tata’s managing director Ravi Kant said that from the first orders, a ballot would then select the initial 100,000 people to get their Nano.

“I think we are at the gates of offering a new form of transport to the people of India and later, I hope, other markets elsewhere in the world,” Mr Tata added.

“I hope it will provide safe, affordable four-wheel transportation to families who till now have not been able to own a car.”

Environmentalists are warning that the Nano will add to India’s already clogged up roads, and pollution levels will soar. Tata says the Nano will be the least polluting car in India.

Factory row

The four-door Nano has a 33bhp, 624cc engine at the rear.

The basic model has no airbags, air conditioning, radio, or power steering. However, more luxurious versions will be available.

A slightly bigger European version, the Nano Europa is due to follow in 2011, and is expected to cost nearer to £4,000.

Analysts said that if the car proves an immediate hit in its home market, Tata may struggle to meet demand.

This is because the main Nano factory in the western state of Gujarat, which will be able to build 250,000 cars a year, is not due to open until next year.

In the meantime, Tata will only be able to build about 50,000 Nanos at its existing plants.

The delay happened when Tata had to abandon plans to build the Nano in a new plant in the eastern state of West Bengal due to a row over land acquired from farmers.

This caused the launch of the Nano to be put back by six months.

Global slowdown

Even if Tata can sell 250,000 models a year, it will add only 3% to the firm’s revenues, says Vaishali Jajoo, auto analyst at Mumbai’s Angel Broking.

“That doesn’t make a significant difference to the top line,” he said.

“And for the bottom line, it will take five to six years to break even.”

Yet with seven million motorcycles sold last year in India, Tata is eyeing a huge marketplace for the Nano.

Like almost all global carmakers, Tata has seen sales fall as the global economic downturn has continued.

The firm made a 2.63bn rupees loss for three months between October and December.
In addition, Tata is struggling to refinance the remaining £2bn of its £3bn loan it took out to buy the Jaguar and Land Rover brands from Ford in June of last year.

Obama: ‘We think that we are moving in the right direction’

The US has announced details of a plan to buy up to $1 trillion (£686bn) worth of toxic assets to help repair banks’ balance sheets.

The “Public-Private Investment Programme” will purchase the troubled mortgages and securities that have been at the root of the credit crunch.

The Treasury has committed $75bn to $100bn to the programme and said the private sector would also contribute.

President Barack Obama said the move was a vital step forward.

“The good news is that we have one more critical element in our recovery,” he said.

“But we’ve still got a long way to go.”

The Treasury said the plan would help the financial system recover.

US banks still hold many mortgage-related assets that they cannot value or sell.

Having so many of so-called toxic assets on their books has made them reluctant to lend, causing the financial system to freeze up, and pushing the economy further into recession.

Investors welcomed the news, with stocks rising in the US and Europe.

Detailed plan

“This approach is superior to the alternatives of either hoping for banks to gradually work these assets off their books or of the government purchasing the assets directly,” the Treasury said.

“Simply hoping for banks to work legacy assets off over time risks prolonging the financial crisis,” it added.

The $75bn to $100bn will come from the Treasury’s $700bn Troubled Asset Relief Program (Tarp), which has already been approved by Congress. This money will be used to fund the government’s purchase of assets.

To encourage private investors to take part in the scheme, low-interest loans and guarantees will be offered to private investors via the Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp – a government agency that backs bank deposits.

This means that the private investors, which the US hopes will include private equity, individual investors, pension plans and insurance companies, will shoulder relatively little risk, with 93% borne by the government.

The programme initially aims to buy $500bn of toxic assets, with the potential to expand up to $1 trillion.

“Over time, by providing a market for these assets that does not now exist, this programme will help improve assets values, increase lending capacity by banks, and reduce uncertainty about the scale of losses on bank balance sheets,” US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner wrote in the Wall Street Journal before the programme was officially announced.

Analysts welcomed the plan but said that a number of questions remained unanswered.

Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics, said the success of the programme depended on the willingness of private investors to take part.

“And, just as importantly, the willingness of the owners of these distressed securities and loans to sell at the price that investors are ready to pay,” he added.

Alternative approach

Mr Geithner added that the plan was needed because the US financial system as a whole was “still working against recovery” and “many banks, still burdened by bad lending decisions, are holding back on providing credit”.

He said that encouraging the private sector to take part would be better for the taxpayer as the risks of purchasing toxic assets would be shared.

BBC business editor Robert Peston said the aim of the plan is to remove as many bad assets as possible from banks’ balance sheets.

This should mean that banks become less anxious about future write-offs and become more confident that they have the capital resources to re-start lending.

It is an alternative approach to that taken by the UK Treasury, which has used taxpayers’ money to insure Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group against future losses on some £600bn of poor loans and investments, he added.

Stocks rise

The markets have been eagerly awaiting the details of the US plan to tackle bank’s toxic assets, which have been seen as a drag on world recovery.

Stocks rose worldwide on hopes that the plan would go some way to cleaning up the world financial system. The FTSE 100 of leading UK shares was up 2.4%, or 42.31 points, at 3885.16.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average rallied 3.8% to 7,553.8 points.

The price of crude oil also hit its highest in almost four months at close to $53 a barrel on optimism the plan would help the US climb out of recession.

The plan was originally announced in February, shortly after Mr Geithner took up his post as Treasury Secretary but details were scant on how it would work.

The Bush administration abandoned its earlier plans to buy up toxic assets in October 2008, and decided instead to use funds from the Tarp programme to take stakes in banks.

Just 793 people can now lay claim to a place on the list, but on average they have lost 23% of their wealth.

The stock market collapse helped Microsoft founder Bill Gates regain the top spot, despite his wealth declining $18bn (£13.06bn) to $40bn.

He ousted investor Warren Buffet, whose fortune declined by $25bn to $37bn.

In 2008, Mr Buffet had managed to end Bill Gates’ 13-year reign at the top as shares in his firm Berkshire Hathaway surged to a record of $150,000 per share just before Forbes formulated its 2008 ultra-rich list.

Declining fortunes

However, the financial crisis has since taken its toll on Berkshire Hathaway, with its share value sinking 50% over the past 12 months.

Indian businessman Anil Ambani experienced the biggest reversal of fortunes, slipping to number 34 on the list from number six last year, as his net worth sank by $31.9bn to $10.1bn over the past 12 months.

The declining health of the world economy meant that to make the top 20 on the Forbes list this year a net worth of just $14bn was needed – compared with $21bn in 2008.

And in the past year, only 44 people on the list managed to increase their fortunes, compared with 656 who lost money.

Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg was the only member of the top 20 who managed to increase his net worth.

His wealth rose by $4.5bn after a re-evaluation of his financial data firm Bloomberg LP.

Discount success

But the credit crunch did prove to be a boon for some names on the rich list, with nine out of the top 20 boosting their fortunes from discount retailing.

Japan’s Tadashi Yanai, founder of budget retailer Uniqlo, was one of the few newcomers to the 2009 list entering it at number 76 with a net worth of $6bn.

Meanwhile German Karl Albrecht moved up from number 10 to number six as his supermarket chain Aldi cashed in on its cut price credentials.

His rise in position came despite the fact that Mr Albrecht’s net worth in absolute terms declined to $21.5bn from $27bn last year.

Regional shifts

In the regional stakes, countries like India and Russia lost ground this year to the US, which reasserted its dominance over the world’s wealthy elite.

The three richest men in India all saw their fortunes plummet by more than half, while Russian billionaires lost a total of $369bn between them.

US citizens now lay claim to 10 of the top 20 spots – up from four last year – while the US is also the country with the most billionaires.

As a result New York has also toppled Moscow as home to the most names on the rich list with 55 billionaires.
The Russian capital itself has slipped to third place, with 27 members on the list, while London has edged into second place with 28 billionaires.

The Senate approved the measure with just three Republican votes, hours after the House of Representatives backed it without Republican support.

Mr Obama has said the plan will “save or create more than 3.5 million jobs”.

Republicans argue the tax cuts are insufficient, and that the economy will be saddled with debt for years to come.

Members of both houses of Congress reached a deal over the content of the stimulus package on Wednesday.

The BBC’s Kevin Connolly in Washington says the first set-piece drama of the Obama era ended in a comfortable but not entirely unqualified victory for the president, who had hoped for more bipartisan support.

All 176 Republicans and seven Democrats voted against the revised package in the House. It was backed by 246 House Democrats.

The three rebel votes in the Senate were enough under Congress rules to stop the Republican Party using blocking tactics to delay the stimulus plan, and it passed 60-38.

‘Immediate investments’

In his weekly address, President Obama described his economy recovery package as “an ambitious plan at a time we badly need it”.

“This is a major milestone on our road to recovery, and I want to thank the members of Congress who came together in common purpose to make it happen,” he said.

“I will sign this legislation into law shortly, and we’ll begin making the immediate investments necessary to put people back to work doing the work America needs done.

“This historic step won’t be the end of what we do to turn our economy around, but the beginning.”

The approved version of the plan is split into 36% for tax cuts and 64% percent in spending and money for social programmes.

Running to more than 1,000 pages, it includes new road building, cash to pay police in hard-up cities, and tax breaks for consumers buying houses and cars.

The package also imposes new limits on cash bonuses and other incentive compensation for executives on Wall Street, which are much tougher than those proposed by the Obama administration last week.

The provision, inserted by Senate Democrats, targets senior executives at financial institutions receiving government bail-out funds.

The colossal package is all to be funded with borrowed money.

Republicans had insisted on larger tax cuts instead of big spending programmes.

Republican Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell said: “This isn’t Monopoly money. It’s real. It adds up, and it has to be paid back, by our children and by their children.”

The Democratic leader of the Senate, Harry Reid, praised the three Republicans who had voted for the bill and said it was the most important piece of legislation he had worked on.

“The country is in trouble and we’re so fortunate we were able to get it passed,” he said.

“It’s going to give this country a shot in the arm.”

Earlier, Mr Obama had said that in the longer term the government needed to rein in spending, and that “we are going to have to once again live within our means”.

The president told members of the Business Council in Washington that the package was “only the beginning of what I think all of you understand is going to be a long and difficult process of turning our economy around.”

Presidential pressure

“We have a once-in-a-generation chance to act boldly, and turn adversity into opportunity, and to use this crisis as a chance to transform our economy for the twenty-first century,” Mr Obama said.

Among the measures in the approved package is a “Buy American” clause that had caused alarm among US trading partners.

The EU and Canada said that provisions favouring American-produced materials for government projects risked provoking retaliatory protectionist measures.

In the face of this reaction, the clause was softened to a version requiring the government not to violate trade agreements.

Last week, the House had approved an earlier $825bn version of the package without any Republican support.

The Senate voted to approve a different $838bn version on Tuesday, with few Republicans opting to back it.

The two versions had to be reconciled in a joint House-Senate committee before facing final votes in the two chambers.

The eurozone economy shrank by 1.5% in the previous quarter and 1.2% on the year, Eurostat said.

Germany’s economy shrank by 2.1% compared with the previous quarter, its worst quarterly performance since 1990.

France shrank by 1.2%, initial data shows, while Italy registered a drop of 1.8%, the steepest drop since 1980.

The data puts pressure on the European Central Bank to cut interest rates.

In the whole of 2008, the economy in the 15 countries using the euro grew by 0.7% against the previous year, Eurostat said. Slovakia joined the eurozone on 1 January 2009, making it a 16-country club.

The Dutch economy shrank 0.9% during the quarter while the Austrian economy eased by 0.2%, the first drop in nearly eight years. In the same quarter, Portugal’s economy contracted by 2% on the previous quarter and 2.1% on the previous year.

“These are huge contractions in Europe, the largest in living memory in most cases,” said Ken Wattret, economist at BNP Paribas.

Companies have cut investment and exports have dropped as the global recession has taken hold.

European companies hit by the slowdown include Air-France KLM, which reported a third-quarter operating loss on Friday, and Michelin, whose final-year profits fell as the crisis in the global car industry took its toll on the tyre maker.

The decline in demand for cars was further highlighted by data released on Friday.

The number of new cars sold in Europe in January was down 27% compared with January 2008, the European carmakers’ association, Acea, said.

German gloom

The slowdown was the most dramatic in Germany, which registered the biggest fall since German reunification in 1990.

The 2.1% contraction was the third consecutive quarterly drop in Europe’s biggest economy, according to the initial data from the Federal Statistics Office, worse than the 1.8% anticipated by analysts.

Year-on-year, the German economy shrank by 1.6%, after growing by 1.4% in the third quarter.

Many are now gloomy about the prospects for 2009.

“This shows things went downhill sharply at the end of the year,” said Juergen Michels, an economist at Citigroup. “We’ll likely head down again the first and second quarter.”

“This number makes it plain that we’re in a very serious recession – the most serious since World War Two. It’s no surprise that exports and investment have tumbled,” said Dirk Schumacher at Goldman Sachs, adding that the rise in inventories did not bode well for the first quarter.

The situation “can hardly get worse,” said Carsten Brzeski at ING Financial Markets.

“The German industrial production has run out of steam with companies working only off their backlogs. Foreign demand has plummeted over the last months,” he added.

Last month, the German government forecast that the economy would shrink by 2.25% this year.

France slowdown

The slowdown in the French economy was slightly worse than analyst expectations of a 1.1% drop.

The French economy expanded slightly in the third quarter, by 0.1%, which means that France has not officially entered a recession – which is defined as two consecutive quarters of contraction.

With consumer spending up by 0.5%, some analysts found cause for hope.

“Consumer spending has held up quite well so you can say there is still money out there to be spent and French households are spending it,” Alexander Law, chief economist at Xerfi said.

Companies also reduced their inventories in the fourth quarter, shaving 0.9% off gross domestic product, a fact that could bode well for industrial production in the first quarter. With warehouses emptier, companies may increase production.

Many say that tough times lie ahead. “The first quarter will be difficult,” Christine Lagarde, France’s economy minister, said. “We will have a difficult year. “

The data increases pressure on the European Central Bank to cut rates. The bank cut the benchmark rate to 2% in January, the lowest in the bank’s 10-year history and kept the rate unchanged in February. Its next decision is due on 5 March.

Data on Tuesday showed that US new home sales had fallen to a near 18-year low in November.

Bad economic data in the US has been making traders worry about how much the demand for oil will fall in the world’s biggest economy.

Attention now turns to the weekly inventories figures from the US Energy Department, which are due out later on Wednesday.

The inventories figures give an indication of how much consumption of oil has declined.
Oil prices have fallen 74% from their peaks in July.

Orders for long-lasting US manufactured goods fell 1% in November, which was less than expected, but there was a big downgrade in October’s figures.

Orders in October fell by 8.4%, down from the first estimate of 6.9%.

It makes October’s fall the biggest since July 2000.

The decline in sales of these durable goods, particularly automobiles, is hitting Detroit hard, with GM, Ford and Chrysler set to receive temporary government help in the New Year.

The weekly figure for new jobless claims rose 30,000 to 586,000, which was more than had been expected, according to the Labor Department.
Rising unemployment appears to be biting, with incomes falling by a worse-than-expected 0.2% in November, following a 0.1% rise in October.

Priyanka who is currently filming for Ashutosh Gowariker’s What’s Your Rashee, had been on a hectic schedule lately. Her father, Dr. Ashok Chorpa told us, “She had fever and had been unwell for some time. We advised her to take a battery of tests and so she has been kept under observation. Though all her test reports are normal, she has been advised to take rest and to slow down her work schedule.”

He further added, “We are leaving for a long family vacation, but Priyanka first wants to complete Ashutosh Gowariker’s film (first week of May).

She claimed that she is not upset about the press reports that hold her break up with Dino. She said, “Why should I be upset if someone is writing something about me and earning his livelihood?”

On probing further about the break-up confirmation, she replied, “I don’t want to comment. I have always stayed away from talking about my personal issues in the media and today also, I will not talk about it.”

One can recall Lara and Dino entering into a relationship over a year back after she split with her boyfriend Kelly Dorji whom she dated for around 8 years. ‘Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahini’ is slated for July 10 release and Ranbir is anxiously waiting for it as his last film ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ did not fare well at the box office. The case is same for Katrina Kaif as her last flick with beau Salman Khan ‘Yuvvraaj’ failed to spell magic. Both the actors are having an urgent need of a hit.

Rumor spread that Ranbir and Katrina’s closeness created trouble in Ranbir and Deepika’s paradise and very often Deepika dropped on the set to enquire about Ranbir.

Now that Ranbir had tagged Katrina hot, Deepika is surely feeling envy.

Even before its release, Sajid Nadiadwala’s ‘Kambakkht Ishq’, has run in to trouble with the Censor Board. A still from ‘Kambakht Ishq’ has become the talk of the town and has created a furore of sorts. The still in question is a promo of ‘Kambakkhat Ishq’ which has Kareena calling Akshay a dog and Akshay in calling her a bitch. Apart from this scene, there is also a line indicating that women are only meant for making love. The line mouthed by Akshay goes like this- “Women are good only for one thing”.

According to reports, women organisations have conveyed their protest against the same, indicating that the statements put women in bad light.

The film’s posters are also bound to raise eyebrows. The posters show Akshay holding Kareena in a sexually aggressive way.

“My parents looked after us very well… we had a fairly sheltered life. I mean my parents were really against me getting into films. I come from a film family. My father and uncle were both filmmakers. And I faced hell at home. It was like there’s no way you’re getting into films,” Aamir Khan told in a recent interview.

“But I don’t usually listen to people. I just do what I feel like. And then when they realised actually it was more because they were concerned for me, you know. Every parent is concerned for their children. And they had been through this line and this profession is so uncertain. You know one day you’re up there, the next day you’re nobody and it’s a really harsh profession,” he added.

Asin and Dhoni will now endorse Big Bazaar and be their Brand Ambassadors. Big Bazaar is a chain of hypermarkets in India, with more than 100 stores in operation. It is a subsidiary of Pantaloon Retail India Ltd’s, Future Group, and follows the business model of world famous Wal-Mart.

The buzz is that she signed this deal for a record amount, the highest she has taken for any endorsement so far. And according to a spokesperson of Big Bazaar, Asin and MS Dhoni were selected as they are the youth icons of India. The photo shoot happened in Mumbai a month back and the television ad will be canned after Dhoni comes back from his successful tour of New Zealand.

Today Asin, after the mega success of Ghajini is the all India brand ambassador for seven major products, and makes more money out of her endorsements than through films. She is undoubtedly a major brand in the country.

A survey taken by a national agency says- “Asin in all her television ads comes across as a friendly neighborhood person who coaxes you to try the product; which has caught the imagination of the viewers. Among movie stars, she is the hottest to endorse consumer goods”.

Katrina Kaif was mobbed while shooting for Prakash Jha’s Rajneeti. The actress had no security whatsoever and was cornered.

The moment Salman learnt of the situation, he sent his security guards to rescue his lady. Obsessive or not Salman was indeed the man of the hour.

From recent interviews, it looks like you’ve learnt to speak like a politician. You deflect questions and use humour to get out of some. How do you approach the media as a neta, Sanjay? Are you guarded?
No, I don’t look at it differently at all. I feel I’m the same old Sanjay talking to the media that I was 20 years ago. But yes, I think time makes you more diplomatic in your answers.

You’re seen as a Bombay boy. How has it been campaigning in Lucknow?
I know that some people feel I’m an outsider to Lucknow, but how can you do that? I’m an Indian first and I have the right to stand from any part of the country that I feel. Lucknow is a part of India. It’s been a great experience campaigning and not at all tiring. My family has always been involved in social service and Gandhian sentiments. My ethics are the same.

Raj Thackeray recently brought up the fact that you were standing from Lucknow. Were you referring to him just now?
No, I never meant Rajbhai. Some people in Lucknow have been questioning why I’m standing from there. There has been a campaign against me, but I’m ready to face everything, even if they dig up the past. I can’t start trading abuses, but I’ll let my work talk for itself.

You’ve now appealed to the Supreme Court for your case. But your opponents have used the AK-47 allegation against you. How do you deal with this?
I’m used to it; I’ve faced it for 18 years. The allegations are baseless and they don’t have their facts right. In its last judgment in my case, the honourable court has taken the draconian part out of my case. I’m no longer a TADA convict and it’s now seen under the Arms Act. I feel people should go by the facts. I’m amused that they bring up my past, but it doesn’t matter. I’ve helped people all the time for cancer, AIDS, drugs. I want my work to speak for me. I’ve been helping people not to be in the news, but because it makes me feel good.

Tell us five things about your constituency, Lucknow?
See, I’m still learning about the voters. I feel the essence of Lucknow is its chikan work and that has died. I’m trying to revive and enhance that. I’d like to do something in the IT sector and the medical facilities there are bad. I’ve been speaking to the people there and they have concerns like electricity, water, law and order. I also feel, why should people leave Lucknow for jobs? It’s my dream that it gets so developed that other people come looking for jobs there.

The complaint against actors is that once they’re elected, they forget their constituency. Will you be based here or in Lucknow? How will you be able to do all this work?
Lucknow isn’t too far. I’m definitely not going to leave films, but I’ll cut down on my work and choose my movies carefully. I want to do a lot. I know actors have faced flak over this, but I’m Sunil and Nargis Dutt’s son. It’s in my genes.

What about Parliament attendance? Actors are notoriously bad at that. How will you balance acting and politics?
You know, once you schedule your life, you can go with it. All of it is manageable.

Sanjay, how do you think your father Sunil would have reacted to you joining the Samajwadi Party?
It’s a tricky question and difficult to answer. But my father was my strength, my force. I believe he would have respected my decision.

Your sister Priya said recently that you’d learn a sense of reality from politics. Is that true?
I feel I’m in the process of growing as a person after joining politics. I read what she said, but I think I’ve faced more reality than others (laughs). This is some new aspect she’s talking about.

The popular notion is that your mentor Amar Singh creates rifts in families. Can you clear the air?
Nothing has happened in my family. There is no rift. It’s because I’m an actor that it keeps getting written about. Every family has ups and downs. Priya is my younger sister and if she’s said anything in anger, I forgive her. We’ll always be together.

Amar Singh is like family. He’s my older brother. He’s been selflessly standing beside me. Amar Singhji takes a stand for someone he cares about and there’s nothing wrong in that. It’s a rare quality. It’s not right to call him a home-breaker.

In a TV interview, you said your wife Maanyata had nothing to do with your decision to enter politics. This interview, though, was arranged after consulting her…
No, no, not at all. You see, my work is divided. I can’t handle everything. Press, politics, acting if I did it all, I wouldn’t be able to sleep! (laughs) I asked Maanyata to handle my interviews now. But really, her decisions are taken in the kitchen, over whether it should be biryani, chicken or kebabs.

If the court says you can’t stand, will Maanyata stand in your place, like Amar Singh suggested?
That’s not decided yet. If the court doesn’t allow me, I’ll respect that. But I’ll still go to Lucknow and campaign for whosoever the party chooses.

You had the bad boy image, in real life and on screen. Will you stop doing negative roles if you’re elected?
Depends on the role. The script is most important. People remember Munnabhai and Vaastav the most; the emotions and sentiments that come through. I’ve already cut down on gangster roles. But I won’t let a character I’m playing define my life. People recognise it’s just a character and I’m only entertaining them.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra said at the Jaipur literary fest that he was disappointed that the concepts of Gandhigiri and jaadoo ki jhappi were being used by political parties.
Vinod is my older brother; he’s absolutely right. It shouldn’t be used in campaigning I respect that and Amar Singh agreed. That said, I can’t stop the public from chanting Munnabhai when I go on rallies. I can’t stop you press people from using that to describe me.

How are things between you and Priya?
I’m not against my sister or I would have stood against her in her constituency. We’re the same blood.

You raised objections to her taking her father’s name?
I have no problems with a woman keeping her father’s name. I was misquoted. But the fact remains that after a woman gets married, she should respect her married name. Even Indiraji could have kept the name Nehru, but she chose Gandhi.

What of Abu Azmi saying that if Congress puts up a candidate opposite you in Lucknow, you will campaign in Mumbai against Priya?
I’ve no answer to that. He never said that. The party decides, but I know they will not make me do it. They understand the bond.

How do you react to Varun Gandhi’s statements? You are half-Muslim yourself.
I won’t comment on that. I’ll only speak for myself.

Rumours are that you’re not committing to more dates on your film Blue, directed by Anthony D’Souza. Too busy with politics?
I’ve given all my dates to Blue. They had asked for 65 days, I shot for nearly a hundred. I’d give more to finish the film. There’s no problem.

Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar lately, we’ve heard all of them take potshots at each other. Where is Sanjay Dutt in all this?
Sanjay Dutt is not a number. I’m not concerned with the numbers game. I don’t get involved.

Will your friends from the film industry campaign for you?
If they come out of their own will, they’re welcome. But I’ll never ask them to campaign for me.

Finally, how do you people see you today as the new Duttsaab or as Sanju Baba?
I feel Baba will remain a favourite. As for Duttsaab, if I’m even 10 per cent of what he was, I’ll feel like I’ve won the battle.

The most beautiful face of Bollywood has in her kitty quite a slew of films with talented directors.

The usual suspects include Mani Ratnam and Rituparno Ghosh – both have directed Ash in the past. But there are directors with whom Ash is set to work for the first time, like Abhinay Deo (who’s directing Delhi Belly for Aamir Khan Productions) or Vipul Amrutlal Shah or Vishal Bharadwaj .

Her favourite director Rituparno Ghosh, who has done films like ‘Chokher Bali’ (Bengali) and Raincoat (Hindi) with the actress and is always keen to work with her, has finalized one bilingual movie which has Ash in a “challenging role”.

Then she is set to act opposite her hubby Abhishek Bachchan yet again for Abhinay Deo’s film, which, Ash says, is very unlike what she’s done with Abhishek so far.

“It’s a special challenge to work with my husband because we’ve to make sure we don’t repeat ourselves,” quips the Bachchan bahu.

And in Vipul Shah’s next, Ash is paired opposite Akshay Kumar . The duo was last seen in Khakee , where Ash played a negative character. About Shah’s movie, the lady says, “It’s something that Vipul, Akshay and I haven’t done before.”

But the project that’s got her most excited is the one with Vishal Bhradwaj, who is a great storyteller and has given us films like Makdee , Maqbool and Omkara . Incidentally, Vishal and Ash had wanted to work together since he was a music composer. He even planned a film called ‘Timbuctoo’ with her but the project got scrapped. However, Vishal promised Ash that he would cast her whenever he has a role that suits her.

Well, Vishal has at last found that role in the movie he will direct after his next release Kaminey .

Meanwhile, Ash is busy with Mani Ratnam’s Ravana and has her dates-diary full for the remaining year.

The ‘Khan’ in the title is incidental; SRK’s character in the film is Rizwan Khan, who is autistic with limited social interaction abilities. Apparently, the film has generated interest among Indian and overseas distributors already. Karan is aware that he’s on thin ice, directing a film that has characters and situations he’s unfamiliar with.

“I am the wrong man to direct this film,” he admits. But at the heart of My Name Is Khan is a tender love story and at directing that, Karan is king. “How can I not have romance in my films?” he asks. “Every filmmaker has to evolve some time. I wanted to make a film in the realm outside my comfort zone. And Shibani Bhatija came up with this mind-blowing script that challenged my abilities,” he says.

His lead actor has a witty reply when asked about being the film’s co-producer too. “Karan doesn’t want to pay me what others do, which is very little, so he said, ‘I can’t underpay you like this, so you be my partner.’ That’s how we’re producing this film,” laughs SRK. Karan admits, “It’s true, I can never put down his price on paper. But considering we were both passionate about the subject, we said why not co-produce the film? We’ve known each other so long (their dostana is 16-years-old) that this new initiative is just an extension of our emotions. Besides, I can never make a film without Shah Rukh. He is a big part of me and my family. He’s like the older brother I never had. I love SRK as a unit — that includes his wife, children, sister and his in-laws.” So, a huge set has been put up at Mehboob Studios and shooting is on with Kajol. Shah Rukh, who is still recuperating from his shoulder surgery, will join the unit by the end of this month.

Whether it is infidelity or homosexuality, Karan hasn’t hesitated to push the envelope and break barriers in the kind of films he is making. His last film, Dostana, directed by Tarun Mansukhani, was among the biggest hits of 2008 and crossed Rs 100 crore. Both SRK and he are determined to push their production houses to the top slot in Bollywood. While SRK is producing Ra-1 and Happy New Year this year, Karan has Wake Up Sid directed by Ayaan Mukherjee, another untitled film by Renzil D’Souza and an animation film Koochie Koochie Hota Hai. “I’m giving new directors a chance and am open to good scripts,” says Karan, “Being in mainstream cinema gives production houses like ours the edge to reach a wider audience. It’s time to move forward.” How was the emotional reconnect with Kajol after eight years? “Shah Rukh and Kajol are indispensable. She’s one of the most talented actresses of Hindi cinema. Every time we wrap up a film, both of us cry, while Shah Rukh looks at us in amusement and asks, ‘What’s wrong?’” says Karan in exasperation.

The event was a fundraiser hosted by the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA). The guests and invitees had to bid for a wine-tasting dinner for 12 people with Ashok Amritraj, CEO of Hyde Park Entertainment.

It was supported by Wells Fargo, and featured a guided tour of the vineyard, wine-tasting, a celebrity auction along with a lunch and a peek at IFFLA 2009.

Says a source close to the actress, “Mallika doesn’t drink and hence did not taste the wine.

She was just more than happy about being invited by IFFLA to be a part of the fundraiser and giving her the opportunity to meet the NRI community and to discover its culture something she is so curious about.”

The source adds, “She was particularly kicked about the Celebrity Live Auction event, which offered the winner the chance to spend a day with Mallika at a professional photo shoot.

And a chance to enjoy lunch on the set with Mallika and have his/her picture taken with the actress by a professional celebrity photographer.

The photo shoot with Mallika Sherawat was sold for $1400.

The funds would go to IFFLA, a non-profit organisation devoted to a greater appreciation of Indian cinema and culture by showcasing films, honouring entertainment industry performers and business executives, and promoting the diverse perspectives of the Indian diaspora.”

After IFFLA, Mallika intends catching up with Hollywood actor Gerard Butler with whom she’s on messaging terms. The actress will be in the US for another month.

The Kannada actress who pockets around Rs 5 lakh for a three-day song says, “I have to wear skimpy costumes to look exciting and sexy. That is why I am paid for. I don’t feel apologetic to be part of a film in a single dance or a single song sequence.”

“The concerned person N. Muthu Kumar has left my employment and we informed the police immediately. Other accusations are false,” the actress said in a statement Thursday.

According to S. Vadivu, her son Kumar was employed with Asin for four years.

“I am worried as Asin’s father Joseph said that Kumar was sacked after he joined the Mumbai underworld several days ago. While my search in Mumbai was fruitless, the facts do not add up because Kumar told me over phone sometime back that he was likely to quit after the actress abused him over his physical handicap,” said Vadivu.

Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Sangram Jangid said: “The issue is being blown out of proportion by a section of the press. The complaint has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities and there is nothing more to it.”

Asin is currently shooting for “London Dreams” as the female lead with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan.

After Knights And Angels, a talent hunt to choose cheerleaders for SRK’s Kolkata Knight Riders, the next to roll out will also be another show on the Indian Premier League.“It’s a new show that will feature all the IPL teams,over a series of six episodes” revealed a source close to the company but did not divulge more details.

Shah Rukh himself proclaimed that he has great ambitions for his television company and wants to produce programmes of international quality. Balancing all areas, there is fiction, comedy and even telefilms in the pipeline. These will be interesting , short films on different genres. Interestingly, the programmes will not be restricted to only NDTV, Shah Rukh’s current favourite channel, but spread across a spectrum of channels.

Red Chillies’s Ghar Ki Baat Hai the comedy series based on Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, and the Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla-hosted chat show The First Wives are also on air.

In fact, Shah Rukh Khan’s reticent better half, Gauri, will be seen chatting about her superstar husband for the first time in the chat show on NDTV Good Times on March 28. The popular show was the first to roll out of Khan’s television production house and Gauri’s interview will be the grand finale to this exclusive show.

Gauri who has modelled for friend Maheep Kapoor’s jewellery line and has also designed SRK’s clothes for some of his films is the producer for most of his home -productions. And now it is heard that the superstar’s wife could go a step further and even host a show for her husband’s company. “If there is some show that suits her, we are sure she will be ready to do it,” revealed a source close to the company .

“She does alternate days exercise which includes yoga and weight training and it’s mainly loose weight training, floor exercises and freehand exercises. She also works with dumbles and her working habits are divided into two schedules. She sweats it out for one and an half hour. She can’t do heavy weight because of her height so she only does loose weight training.”

Further about her diet he said, “No oily food and basically one should have balance diet and each individual will have different balance diet as it depends upon a person’s DMRE and metabolism structure. Accordingly then we prepare balance diet, so for Rani also there is a separate balance diet with 45% carbohydrates, 40% protein and 15% fats and this balance diet includes no sugar and maida flour and oil just one tablespoon in a day and most important no sweets.”

Rani already looked thinner than her normal self in the song that she did for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. She’s working on her next film for Yash Raj called Cricket, in which she is a player. So Rani is going on the foot-prints of her co-actor Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

The actress, who’s been doing art-house films like Mithya and Dasvidaniya , is trying something different again. She went to US for this tele-series audition and landed up the role opposite comedian Chris Kattan.

The line producer of Slumdog Millionaire , Tabrez Noorani, who is also involved in ‘Bollywood Hero’ production, was instrumental in getting Neha this role. Tabrez is Neha’s friend. He and Mumbai-based choreographer Longinus Fernandes are assistants in ‘Bollywood Hero’s production.

He now wants to take up more ‘challenging’ roles and also rues that no good director has approached him with solo-hero movie scripts so far.

‘People expect a lot of things, they ask me why don’t you do single hero movies. Honestly, I don’t know what to say? No director of the calibre of making a good single hero is coming to me with that kind of offer,’ Zayed told IANS.

He has mostly starred in ensemble cast films like ‘Main Hoon Na’, ‘Cash’, ‘Speed’, ‘Mission Istanbul’ and most recently ‘Yuvvraaj’. Zayed said he is yet to make an impression on filmmakers’ minds that he can carry a solo-hero film on his own.

‘I am going to have to make that sort of an impression in their (director’s) minds. I’ll have to give them a reason to come to me with solo-hero script. I have to inspire them by working with good directors, I’d rather do that. That’s my game plan,’ said Zayed.

The actor, who is currently working on two more multi-starrers – a comic caper ‘Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge’ and action flick ‘Blue’, says he gained a lot by sharing screen space with Suniel Shetty, Sanjay Dutt and Shah Rukh Khan.

‘When you work with people who are bigger than you and have more understanding than you, you know that one day you are going to play in their playing field. My whole idea is to give my best and slowly and steadily find myself in the first five,’ he said confidently.

Currently, Zayed wishes to get ‘challenging’ roles.

‘I want to do roles that are challenging and want to work with people who can give me the challenge and present the film the way it should be presented. There is no point in doing a film that will never see the light of the day,’ Zayed said.

Though his much-hyped ‘Yuvvraaj’ failed to click with the audience and critics alike, the actor hopes to create some ripples with his daredevil underwater stunts in ‘Blue’, which also stars Akshay Kumar, Suneil, Katrina Kaif and Lara Dutta.

But Asin denies the report of being personal with Salman. She informs that no exchange of gifts happened on the sets. When asked about her amiable friendship with Sallu. Asin tells, “I don’t know how to react to it because it’s absolutely false. I have not got any gifts at all from Salman.

Speaking about return gift she told, “In fact I read that he gave me a gift on Onam and I gave a return gift on Eid which is absolutely false because we were shooting from early morning to late night. Thus there was no time to buy gifts or exchange gifts.”

Being a professional Asin knows that such things are part and parcel of her occupation. “When that news came out the whole unit was laughing because everyone knows what the truth is. Everyone knows how we are working on this project we all are professionals.” She signs off.

“Hrithik hurt his arm while doing a stunt shot for ‘Kites’ at the Filmistan studio. He was breaking a glass with a rod and one piece of glass flew and hurt him. It’s a minor injury – there’s nothing major,” a source close to Hrithik told IANS.

Hrithik suffered many injuries after he performed some daring stunts in “Krrish” and “Dhoom 2″.

He had torn the ligament in his right knee and continued working despite the pain. Towards the latter half of 2008, Hrithik underwent surgery in the US and spent nearly two months recovering but his tryst with injuries continues.

“Kites”, directed by Anurag Basu, is being touted as featuring Hrithik’s most sensuous role till date. He stars opposite US-based Spanish model Barbara Mori.

The film is about an Indian boy’s romantic affair with a Latina girl and their predicament as they do not understand each other’s language. It also stars actress Kangana Ranaut.
